Buying your child's first school uniform and school shoes is a momentous day! You'll almost certainly need a hanky when you see them dressed in it for the first time. Make sure their feet stay safe and dry in some good quality school shoes.

I love shoes and I think it's important to buy well fitting good quality shoes for children. Take them into the local shoe shop to get measured! You should do this each time you're after buying new shoes, or use the instructions on minibarratts site.

We always used to go and get new school shoes just before term started - and had our feet measured each time. I'm sure my mum would have jumped at the chance of buying shoes online to save money, but it wasn't an option way back then!

Black shoes are usually what school demands - it's a sensible colour and looks smart with nice white new socks (Always make sure they fit too and that they haven't got holes in) - buying quality leather shoes means they breathe too making the insides less stinky! And they should keep on polishing up for the whole school year. Every few months you need to check they still fit - but look out for signs that they are being uncomfortable and pinching your child's feet, perhaps making them walk funny, or them being overkeen to not wear them. It takes a moment to press the toes through the shoes gently and see if they're at the end - and if they are it's time for new shoes that are a bit bigger!

For outside of school they should have a couple of pairs of shoes - some smart ones for when you have to go somewhere nice, some old trainers or boots for kicking about in the garden with, sandals for summer and a nice pair of wellies for winter! There's nothing wrong with having lots of pretty shoes for little princesses but most young lads just aren't as interested in footwear as their female counterparts - if they can kick a ball with it then they don't usually care what colour they are!

Don't forget a pair of slippers for in the house - no point wearing outdoor shoes inside!
